Juan manuel Quiñones. Quiñones: Al origen
August 2nd - December 14th, 2025
CENTRO MIRADOR DEL CARMEN
Paseo Marítimo Pedro Manrique. Estepona. Málaga. Spain
The exhibition, curated by Flor Reiners and Mariella Franzoni, sheds light on how Juan Manuel Quiñones transforms the task of sculpting marble into a unique artistic language. Through more than 180 pieces created over the last fifteen years, the artist speaks to us of the utopia of summer and of a time suspended in limbo. His works, deeply rooted in childhood memories, articulate a territory and a memory shared by those who have learned between beach, sun and play.
The exhibition is structured around six thematic areas: Origin, Sketches, The Summer Factory, Punta de la Plata, Sea and Mountains, and When the Sun Heats Up. Six scenes or fragments of an emotional topography that intertwine the artist's personal memory with the collective urban imagination of the city.
With sculptures made of marble, Quiñones produces life-size or oversized simulacra of everyday objects: ice creams, toys, flippers, surfboards, scooters... Entities that appear inert but, being carved by hand in stone, acquire a form of eternal permanence, transforming themselves into monuments to desire, play and memory.
The utopia of summer and its time suspended between beach, sun and play are the focus of this exhibition which, in the words of the curators, is conceived as a symbolic reunion between the artist and his hometown, and at the same time as the intersection of two parallel perspectives: one towards the sculptural work of Quiñones, who has turned marble into a malleable material for sculpting monumental simulacra of summery, playful, ephemeral or edible objects (ice cream, toys, flippers, surfboards, scooters); and another towards the recent history of a territory such as the Costa del Sol, which has nurtured a lifestyle based on leisure, desire and a shared nostalgia for a summer utopia.
