Juan Muñoz. Stories of Art
November 18th 2025 - March 8th 2026
Museo del Prado
Paseo del Prado, s/n. Madrid. Spain
Juan Muñoz frequented the Museo del Prado not only because of his unquestionable commitment to art history, but because of his desire to explore and make as much of it his own as possible. The artist returns to some of the spaces in the aforementioned museum —Room 12 dedicated to Velázquez, Room 28 dedicated to Rubens, the south staircase near the Murillo entrance, and the esplanade at the Goya door— thanks to the exhibition curated by Vicente Todolí, which weaves together a dialogue between his creations, those of the masters, and the public, who participate in both Velázquez's and Muñoz's meninas, for example.
A selection of installations, sculptures, cabinets with small figures, drawings, and engravings show how the artist was steeped in the artistic and philosophical underpinnings of the Renaissance, Mannerism, and Baroque; that is, how Juan Muñoz understood the transition from harmony and humanism to complexity, tension, drama, and emotion in order to speak to us about illusionism, theatricality, and architecture as a space susceptible to constructing a fiction where the viewer assumes the role of protagonist.
